It perplexes me why even when all the research points the other way, law makers continue to act in a contrary fashion. Is it because implementing the correct policies to address the issues plaguing are educational systems is too costly? How can applying bandaid after bandaid of a solution to the problem save ANY money??

Forcing 14 year old students to choose a major will not help them to see how what they're learning is any more relevant. Only adapting the curriculum to be student-centered and using real world application of what is being taught will help students to see how the material is relevant. That means adapting curriculum... not forcing students to choose a major. Forcing students to choose a major without further modification of the curriculum will leave you, you guessed it... back at square goddamn 1.

This is not to say that there is no place for vo-tech or magnet schools that have a concentration in any specific area, there is an established place for these within a larger system. What Jeb Bush is proposing is simply an inappropriate application of something that has worked well for a discreet population because they at that tender age have an interest that can be developped not all students have such a focus and need further exposure and guidance to find their niche.

Black Hair Redux

-McKinney, perspiring lightly, talked about having been stopped, touched and disrespected by the officer.

-So it would be reasonable to think that McKinney's hairdo should not have elicited anything more than a shrug or a knowing and sympathetic whisper among black women, "Girrrl, did you see her head?"

-Instead, talk turned ugly on blogs about her news-conference hair. It became the impetus for all sorts of racially driven insults about her locks and their natural texture. A black woman's hair is an easy, timeworn source of racist mockery. It has become an exhausting cliche of self-loathing whether it is kinky, hot-combed, braided, locked or chemically relaxed. (Indeed, plenty of black folks see all kinds of dire race-traitor undertones in Condoleezza Rice's smooth, controlled cap of hair.) A black woman's hair is a bottomless source of inspiration for essays, books and documentaries.

A New One For the Memoirs

So this time my underwear stayed firmly in place. However, when I attempted to discard the wraper for my feminine hygiene product I did not notice that oh, the bin wasn't in fact attached to the flap but rather was sitting somehwere below it on the floor. So I push the flap in and drop the wrapper. Of course since there was no bin in place to act as a receptacle, the wrapper fell out and into the next stall next to that girl's feet.

What do you do? Reach under and into the next stall almost brushing her feet to retrieve it? Pretend like it never happened? You see my dilemma then don't you... why me?

Procrastination

As you can see, I will do anything to avoid finishing this paper. However, I have a photograph that needs to be shared.

We ate at A Taste of Carolina today for lunch... the sides were great, the fried chicken I wasn't thrilled with but overall the meal was quite satisfying. For $5.99 I'll be back for sure.
